I always want to ask my favorite writers about the stories behind their poems, curious about the stems and roots that led to the blossom of their words. Today I’m sharing a new video of me reading my poem, “Birthday”, published in my book, “The Madness Vase”, as well as a few of the seedlings it grew from.
Before moving to Colorado, I lived in New Orleans. I left a few years before Katrina hit. The poem was written shortly after I returned to better understand the hurricane’s damage while visiting with friends who were still there. The neighborhood I once lived in was destroyed, but a block away there was a nearly flattened house spray-painted with the words, “WE’RE COMING BACK”. The resilience of the statement brought my heart to its knees, and its lasting impact was what inspired the pulse of this piece.
